30A Current Shunt (0.5% or 0.1% Precision Resistor) Replacement for KS34330A and for Multimeters

Many desktop and handheld multimeters are unable to measure high currents above 10A. Even those rated for 10A cannot measure such currents for extended periods because the internal current-sensing resistor generates excessive heat, which can easily damage the meter.

In addition, many multimeters either lack a current measurement range altogether or have a very limited one—such as 1A or 3A. For example, 6½-digit multimeters like the AG, KS34401A, and K2000 can only measure up to 3A; the HP3457 is limited to 1A, and some models, such as the HP3456A, do not include a current measurement function at all. In such cases, a 30A current shunt becomes extremely useful, as it converts the current signal into a voltage signal. Since all multimeters support a 100mV or millivolt range, they can use this shunt to measure high currents indirectly via the voltage drop. This shunt can handle continuous current up to 15A without any issues.

The current shunt uses a 4-wire current-sensing resistor with 1mΩ resistance and 0.5% or 0.1% precision. It provides an output of 1mV per 1A of current. Even when 15A flows through it, the power dissipation of the 4-wire resistor is only 0.225W, meaning it generates very little heat and supports long-term measurement. Additionally, the voltage drop is minimal, enabling lossless measurement.
